Bernhard Erdl, Managing Director of the power supply manufacturer PULS, wanted to ship 17 pallets with protective face masks to India as quickly as possible in order to support the local people. He found out about this urgent need in India through an appeal in the Senate of Economics, of which Bernhard Erdl is a member.
The Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI) has been on the forefront against the spread of the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. It is one of the world’s largest non-profit health organisations with over 3,570 connected healthcare and social service institutions in India. Together, this network serves more than 21 million people a year, including many poor people who are lacking basic necessities.
The centers are headed by volunteers, 90% of whom are women. More than 1,000 sister doctors and 50,000 sister nurses, paramedics and social workers are committed full-time to the network and the fight against COVID-19.
The long way of a much needed aid delivery
The bureaucratic and logistical effort for the planned aid delivery was enormous. The export from the PULS warehouse in China, the clarification of all customs formalities and the transport by ship to the target region took more than four months. This project was only possible thanks to the excellent cooperation between the PULS employees in China, the headquarters in Munich and the contact persons at CHAI.“I was deeply impressed by the willingness of our employees to fully support this humanitarian project for months,” says Bernhard Erdl. “This global aid project has brought us even closer together as colleagues.”

The goal of the international competition was to design and build a fully functional drilling machine capable of boring a 30-meter tunnel as fast as possible.
The TUM team developed a 12-meter-long boring machine that weighs 22 tons. This machine drilled the longest tunnel section of 22 meters.
PULS also contributed to this success by providing the following equipment to the students for free:
Our 3-phase power supply QT20.241 was used to supply the control system of the machine. In addition the buffer module UBC10.241 was used to buffer the power supply of the control system and the peripherals in the cabinet.
Our 3-phase field power supplies FIEPOS (FPT500.241-002-101) were used to supply the hydraulics, which are needed to adjust the drill head by +/-3°. The high protection class of IP65/67 was particularly helpful here. The students were able to use these units directly in the drill head and the dusty environment of the desert.
PULS is happy to support these young innovators with its power supplies. Especially our rugged FIEPOS units with IP67 met their requirements precisely. They worked perfectly reliable under the burning sun of Las Vegas.
About the Boring Company:
The Boring Company was founded by Elon Musk and is headquartered in Hawthorne, California, on the SpaceX site. The company builds tunnels for transportation, utility and cargo. Its mission is to solve traffic, enable rapid point-to-point transportation, and shape the cities of tomorrow.
With the student competition the Boring Company addressed two very important goals which are increasing the speed and reducing the cost of tunnel construction.
The CP20.245-R2 features the perfect electronical and mechanical design for the rough environmental conditions at sea and on the coast. The power supply is characterized by its high immunity to transients and voltage peaks as well as its robust aluminum housing. The device provides the full output power of 480W even with fluctuating ambient temperatures between -40°C and + 60°C. The extensive approval package includes Marine DNV, Marine ABS and ATEX, among others.
High reliability thanks to integrated decoupling feature
The built-in decoupling feature makes the CP20.245-R2 unique. An integrated decoupling MOSFET enables a safe 1 + 1 and n + 1 redundancy between the power supplies. This ensures the availability of all necessary systems in the event of a fault. The additional redundancy module that is normally required for this kind of setup can be omitted. The special plug-in connectors allow a replacement of the devices during operation, if the sequence described in the data sheet is adhered to.
Proven industrial version is the basis
The CP20.245-R2 is based on the proven industrial version of the CP20, which is used in thousands of applications worldwide. The high efficiency of 95.2% ensures low power losses and little waste heat. In addition, the 20% power reserve has been taken over from the basic version. The compact product width of 48mm could be retained despite the additional, application-specific features.

As a result, a reliable and cost-effective condition monitoring feature can be integrated into almost any system and users can benefit immediately from faster fault diagnosis and increased system availability.
All data in one glance, directly in the application
The display shows important status information about the power supply for the service technician and distinguishes between real-time information and recorded data. The real-time data supplied by the CP20.248 includes the input and output voltage, output current, operating hours and temperature inside the device. The recorded data gives users insight into the number of transients on the input side as well as minimum and maximum voltage and temperature values for example. This information helps the system engineer to optimize the entire application in terms of reliability and to identify the cause of occurring errors more efficiently. The display and data storage are not supplied by the power supply output itself which means that the information is still available, even if the power supply fails.
Safe monitoring and remote control
For remote status monitoring, two relay contacts for DC-OK and alarm signals are available. Using the two additional inputs, the power supply can be put into an energy-saving standby mode using the remote ON / OFF function and automatic load sharing in parallel operation can be realized. The latter enables an optimized temperature balance between the power supplies connected in parallel, which leads to a longer service life of the devices.
Small space requirements, thanks to high efficiency
All CP20 versions share the same compact housing with dimensions of 48x124x127mm (WxHxD). There is even extra room for the integrated display. This is made possible by a very high efficiency of 95.6%. Thanks to the low power losses, less heat is generated and the clearance and creepage distances can be reduced. The 24V, 10A DIN rail power supply CP10 with display will also be available soon.

Before the AIMIS-FYT technology will be ready for take-off in real space missions, the project has to pass some extensive tests. During a first parabolic flight in November 2020 the team achieved some promising results with 3D printing in weightlessness. How does 3D printing work in space?
The team uses an innovative printing process in which photoreactive resin is extruded and cured by UV light. If you would like to learn more about the printing techniques for the various straight and curved rods, please visit the AIMIS website.
What is the benefit of 3D printing directly in space?
The current way of transporting equipment into space is not efficient. The structural parts are primarily designed to withstand the high stress during the launch phase of a spacecraft.
Due to the high cost and limited space on a launch vehicle, a 3D printing process directly in space is more cost-effective.
Testing during parabolic flights
The team conducted eight experiments during a parabolic flight to investigate the 3D printing process under microgravity conditions.
In addition to weightlessness, they were also simulating conditions with g-forces similar to the ones on the Moon and Mars. For these experiments PULS provided the necessary power supplies.
Based on the excellent performance and results, the project team was invited to participate in another parabolic flight campaign with the European Space Agency (ESA). This test environment to prove that 3D printing actually works in space. We are confident that the team will be successful and achieve more impressive results.
